Mean Streak (Paul K. Lewis, Fall 2024) |
Mean Streak (Paul K. Lewis, Fall 2024 Introduction) (Explosion in the Paint Factory (Howard) X Richard J. Howard (Ridder)) Tet. M, Sev, 6" bloom, 27" scape, 2 way branching, 15 buds.
I've been trying to breed striped daylilies for some time now. I've had a lot of solid colored seedlings with no striping. I can't even begin to tell you how frustrating that was and I wanted to give up. Fortunately some folks encouraged me to continue trying to breed for this look and low and behold, I have started seeing some good results. Mean Streak is a step forward in a big way. Mean Streak is a light orange bloom surrounded by red streaks, blending into a yellow green throat. Mean Streak is a slow morning opener, but once fully open you can see what lovely blooms it has. The icing on top of the cake is that Mean Streak is very fertile. Sets pods on almost every bloom. Pollen is easy as well. $300 for a SF. SOLD OUT. Will be available from re sellers in the future.

Dunder Mifflin (Paul K. Lewis, Fall 2024) (Rich Howard (Kendig) X The Undefinable Kid (DeVito)) Tet., Sev, M, 6" bloom, 28" scape, 3 way branching, 17 buds.
I worked very hard for a long time to get a striped daylily with this look worthy of introduction. I am quite proud of my introduction, Dunder Mifflin. Most daylilies in this color class are short and top branched with very few buds. Not Dunder Mifflin! It boasts a nice 28" scape with 3 way branching. Dunder Mifflin is a yellow flower with consistent red to dark red flecks and stripes across the bloom, blending into a green throat. Easy fertility. Another one that you can just load up with pods. Pollen fertile as well. Named for the company in one of my favorite sitcoms, The Office. $200 for a SF. SOLD OUT. Should be available from resellers this Fall! Watch on the Lily Auction.

Blue Tile Lounge (Paul K. Lewis, Fall 2024) |
Blue Tile Lounge (Paul K. Lewis, Fall 2024) (Bluegrass Memories (Preuss) X Trouble in Paradise (Emmerich)) Tet., Sev, EM, 5.5" bloom, 22" scape, 2 way branching, 12 buds.
Where I live, I have very limited space to line out all my seedlings. A lot of times I'll have just a few spaces left to plant and just plant one seedling from a group of seedlings. Blue Tile Lounge is an example where I just planted one seedling and had amazing results. (Plant your seedlings people! Even if it is just one seedling!) When I saw the first bloom, I stood amazed at the color of it. I thought to myself, "this won't repeat in the subsequent blooms." To my surprise it did. I had this seedling planted in one of the worst locations and immediately moved it to my best bed. The last couple years it has continued to show off those amazing colors. Before I get carried away, let me tell you that Blue Tile Lounge is definitely a hybridizer's bridge plant. It has a 22 inch scape, making it a front of the border daylily. I don't like introducing short daylilies unless they are special. Blue Tile Lounge is exactly that. Blue Tile Lounge is a light purple bloom with a blue violet eye zone and a double edge of blue violet and gold, blending into a yellow green throat. Blue Tile Lounge will set pods, but the pollen is easier. I have been breeding for this color hoping for a taller scape. I hope that Blue Tile Lounge will be a stepping stone to more seedlings in this color range. $200 for a SF. SOLD OUT. Should be available from resellers in the future.

The Ghost in You (Paul K. Lewis, Fall 2024) |
The Ghost in You (Paul K. Lewis, Fall 2024) (Song in the Sea (Emmerich) X Frank Harnichar (Lewis)) Tet., Sev, 6" bloom, 32" scape, 3 way branching, 17 buds.
I seem to plant all my purple seedlings together. This isn't by mistake. I like to see which seedlings stand out against their piers. There was a row of several purples and The Ghost in You was clearly the best. I relocated it to a better area so I could let it increase better and it really has been putting on a show this year. Plant habit is excellent. Blooms sit on top of lovely 32 inch scapes. The Ghost in You is purple bloom with a cream colored watermark and matching ruffled edge, blending into a yellow green throat. Sets pods fairly easily and the pollen is fertile. Another purple I am quite proud of. $150 for a SF. SOLD OUT. Should be available on the Lily Auction in the future.

Louis Armstrong (Paul K. Lewis, Fall 2024) |
Louis Armstrong (Paul K. Lewis, Fall 2024) (Blood, Sweat and Tears (Emmerich) X Stolen Heart (Pickles)) Tet., Sev, M, 6" bloom, 28" scape, 2 way branching, 15 buds.
Out of a row of several Stolen Heart seedlings, two were head and shoulders above the crowd. Louis Armstrong was one of them. I would walk into the garden and you could see Louis Armstrong from a distance. It almost glowed and that is rare for a red. It has nice height which helped it get noticed. This red is special. Louis Armstrong is a dark red flower with a lighter red watermarked eye zone, blending into a yellow green throat. Easily fertile both ways. Fall delivery, $100 for a SF. SOLD OUT. Should be available from re sellers within the year.
Phyllis Boehm (Paul K. Lewis, Fall 2024) (Roar With Pride (Marchant) X Stolen Heart (Pickles) Tet., Sev, EM, 5.5" bloom, 26" scape, 2 way branching, 15 buds.
You remember the people who are kind to you. When I was grieving the loss of my first wife, there were certain people that took the time to ask how I was doing. Phyllis Boehm was one of them. It meant a lot to me and I wanted to do something nice in return. Phyllis passed away a couple years ago, so I thought it was time I named this seedling for her. Phyllis Boehm the daylily is a dark red flower with a pink watermark eye zone, blending into a yellow green throat. I have a clump of it this year and it has been putting on a show. Easy fertility, pod and pollen fertile. $100 for a SF. SOLD OUT. Should be available from resellers within the next year.

Brass in Pocket (Paul K. Lewis, Fall 2024) |
Brass in Pocket (Paul K. Lewis, Fall 2024) (Lewis seedling (Wowee Cherokee (Hensley) X Lemon Dazzler (Benz)) X Wake Up America (Schwarz B.)) Tet., Dormant, EM, 6" bloom, 28" scape, 3 way branching, 15 buds.
I have been working diligently on trying to hybridize a decent lemon yellow tetraploid daylily for some time now. I have a great love for the color yellow in daylilies since it was the first color that I fell in love with (Hyperion in my Grandmother's garden) that sent me down this path. I wasn't aware of the intro Wake up America until Curt Hanson got a bunch of seedlings from Bob Schwarz. Some were from his introduction, Wake Up America and the colors were crisp. I knew I had to grow Wake Up America and was fortunate to find someone selling it. Since then I have taken the pollen from Wake Up America into my favorite lemon yellow seedling. The best seedling from that cross is Brass in Pocket. (named for a Pretender's song) Brass in Pocket is a lemon yellow self, blending into a yellow green throat. Lovely blooms in the early season. You can't miss it. Pollen is good, but so far I haven't set pods on it. $100 for a SF. SOLD OUT, but should be available in the future.
Sorry that some of these sold out early. I always make sure to send the ones that are sold out to re sellers around the country, so if you are looking for something specific, please email me at PLar4747@aol.com. Thank you, Paul K. Lewis
